IP Rating

IP Rating or International Protection Rating, sometimes also interpreted as Ingress Protection Rating consists of the letters IP followed by two digits and an optional letter. As efined in international standard EN 60529 (British NS EN 60529:1992, European IEC 60509:1989), the first number defines the level of protection against penetration of solid objects (including body parts like hands and fingers), dust, accidental contact, in electrical enclosures. The second number defines the level of protection against harmful ingress of liquid/moisture into the housing.The first number defines the level of protection against penetration of solid objects into the housing. The second number defines the level of protection against penetration of liquids into the housing. The Ratings are defined in international standard EN 60529 (British NS EN 60529:1992, European IEC 60509:1989). 1 – ≥ 50.0 mm diameter object

Protection for any large surface of a human body, such as the back of a hand, but no protection against deliberate contact with a body part.

1 – Dripping water

Protection against dripping water falling vertically shall have no harmfull effect.

2 – ≥ 12.5 mm diameter object

Protection against contact by fingers.

Protection against medium-size of foreign objects larger than 12mm.

2 – Dripping water when tilted up to 15°

Protection against dripping water falling vertically shall have no effenct when housing is tilted to 15 degrees from vertical.

3 – ≥ 2.5 mm diameter object

Protection against contact by tools, wire (larger than 2.5mm diameter). Protection against tools, thick wires, etc.

3 – Spraying water

Protection against spraying water at up to 60 degrees from vertical.

4 – ≥ 1.0 mm diameter object

Protection against contact by small tools (larger than 1mm diameter). Protection against most wires, screws, etc.

4 – Splashing water

Protection against splashing and spraying water jets from any direction

5 – Dust Proof

Complete protection against contact in sufficient quantity to interfere with satisfactory operation of equipment.

5 – Water jets

Protection against low pressure jets of water from any direction.

6 – Dust tight

Complete protection against contact;No ingress of dust.

6 – Powerful water jets

Protection against heave seas or a strong jet of water from direction.

7 – Immersion up to 1 m

Protection against temporary immersion.Water will not enter under stated conditions of pressure and time.

8 – Immersion beyond 1 m

Protection against indefinite immersion in water under a specified pressure.

Our Range

While we cover a huge range of electrical enclosures, our most common IP ratings are probably 20,65, 66 and 68. So for quick reference, these are defined below:

  • IP20 – IP rated as “finger or medium-size of foreign objects larger than 12mm. ”
  • IP65 – IP rated as “dust tight” and protected against low pressure of jets of water.
  • IP66 – IP rated as “dust tight” and protected against heavy seas or strong jets of water.
  • IP 68 – IP rated as “dust tight” and protected against complete, continuous submersion in water.

OMIITEK LED strip light has an IP rating of 65, meaning that it is tolerant against dust penetration, and its waterproof rating denotes protection against climatic conditions such as rain and snow, but cannot be immersed in water, such as a pond or swimming pool.

Applications for water tight enclosures could include dairy or any food preparation factories, clean rooms for information technology services, or medical facilities. These enclosures and the dust-proof or dust-tight ones have compactly gasketed sealings to securely prevent water or dust from entering the space.

You may come across vapor tight enclosures with high ratings like IP-65, 66, and 67. These enclosures can houser LED lamps, safeguarding the lighting from dust and water. While it may seem like IP ratings are only useful in industrial settings, this attribute is helpful in classifying landscape lighting, security cameras, and other outdoor equipment as well.
